Toys are great – The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet…

I’ve just purchased myself one of these little babies (click for bigness)…

Nokia 770

It’s a Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. In a nutshell, it’s a WiFi and Bluetooth Enabled internet and Email client, running a version of, get this nerds, Debian Linux. These things have been around for a little while now (probably a year and a half or so), and started out at £249, which was way too expensive. However, with the recent release of the Nokia 800 (the follow-up), thie 770 has plummeted in price, and I’ve just picked one up brand new for £73!!!!

I’m actually quite excited by this. It has a fully featured web browser, that’s flash compatible. It’s actually Opera, so all is good in that case (I’m typing this on Opera as we speak…!) It also has a full POP3/IMAP email client, and can play video and audio no problem. The screen is about 4.5″ish in size (diagonal), and is a generous 800×480 resolution-wise. Considering the PSP, with it’s very sharp screen is only 480×272, then this should be a joy to behold! It only has 64Mb of internal memory, but uses RS-MMC (or Micro-MMC), like some other Nokia phone devices to expand, so space shouldnt be an issue.

As I just mentioned the ‘P’ word, it should be noted that a phone is exactly what this is NOT. It has no space for a SIM card, and its only means of network connection are Wireless (802.11b/g) and Bluetooth (via a compatible mobile with a data conection). I want this to provide an easy means of getting on the net anywhere in the house. I want to be able to lounge on the sofa whilst updating this blog (so I hope it’s compatible!), and be able to check my email without going upstairs to the computer room.

As for other reasonos for having it, as I surf the net, I find more and more compelling reasons to own one of these little wonders. As it’s a Linux-based OS, the support for it from the community has been good. Soon after it was released there were a good selection of apps available for it. These include :-

  • A VoIP client (Gizmo), which is Google-talk compatible (but alas not Skype yet)
  • Several good media players
  • It can act as a media endpoint for my (already set up) Tversity server
  • GAIM has been ported, so I can use it for IM
  • With a cheapie Bluetooth GPS unit, it can act as a sat-nav
  • These, and many other apps that have been ported, or are in development, make this a great little project, and something that I think will be genuinely useful around the house, and a good replacement for my laptop when I’m out and about.

Once I get hold of it, I’ll be having a good old play before posting the findings on here, so watch this space!

just popped in to say hello. have you found any more interesting stuff to do with your nokia? i became a bit excited when i installed uktube and the other stuff to enable me to download and save any videos from youtube to the memory card. but,my dreams of creating a huge collection of videos, nicked from youtube came unstuck after i installed a patch, following the recent update. uktube has disappeared from the nokia. i think i may have incorrectly installed the stuff,so i will have another attempt later. you definitely have to learn to be a bit geeky with this thing, open source and all,i suppose it just requires patience, but it seems like you need bucketloads of the stuff.patience.that is,oh, and the time! just wish you can install, plug and play, like other gear on the market.cheers for now.

Well, to be honest, in the last week or so, I’ve been busy reseaarching the new iMac models (see post on the front page!). However, I constantly have the 770 with me in work, as I use it all day for monitoring my private emails.

If you have anything good to share 770 wise, dont hesitate to let me kno – even links etc. If its good, I’ll post it up on the site.

      Cheers!
