Nokia N73 on Three UK – Use as a Modem with Mobile Broadband

I’ve been playing (and in fact am currently) with using my N73 as a modem with my PC laptop. As I’ve said before, I’m on the Three UK mobile broadband add-on, which I wanted to use with the Nokia 770. Thing is, this weekend, I’m away from home, so got the impetus to try it on my laptop for the first time. After installing the Nokia PC suite, I connected through Bluetooth to the phone, and dialled out. The settings for ‘Three UK (E-series)’ worked fine (though ‘Three UK’ alone didn’t strangely – not sure why this would be!). I only got 115k though, so I connected via a USB cable instead and retried. I’m currently in a 3G area, and the connection reports itself as being 400-500Kb/s, which by my reckoning, isnt bad for a mobile connection. I suppose the connection speed is limited by the Bluetooth speed when connecting that way. Not too much of a bind though, as if I have a laptop with me, it’s easy enough to carry an extra USB cable around!

Unfortunately, the N73 isnt compatible with Three’s new ‘Turbo’ (or 3.5G) connection, which gives mobile broadband speeds of up to 2.8Mb/s in enabled areas (mostly currently Major Cities and around, but apparently gradually spreading out – much like the original 3G signal). To be honest, at the moment, it really doesnt bother me, as the speed I’m getting is by far enough. Also, with only 1Gb a month to play with, it’s probably better that the speed isn’t too high, as I’d be tempted to download a lot more, and quickly use up my data allowance! I can report that Skype works well over this connection too, which is a bonus.

I’d heartily recommend it for PC users, though I’m not too sure about Mac users. I gave it a go on the iMac yesterday, and it connected ok, though the speed was low. this is more likely to be becasue i dont live ina 3G enabled area though, ratehr than any problem with the connection itself.

All-in-all, very good, and I’ll definitely be using it more when I’m away.

Hi, I noticed that you have nokia phones on three, I recently signed up to three on an e61 with the £5 internet addon but it seemed too weak for a power user. I was just wondering if you have tried out putty on the broadband add-on and also the enhanced msn messenger (not the one that comes with three)

Because it’s frustrating to pay for “broadband” “internet”, when all you really subscribe to is web browsing.

    Thanks.

I haven’t yet tried out putty, but I dont see any reason why it wouldn’t work, as all ports seem to be open. In fact, i do want to try an SSh client, as I use one to create an encrypted tunnel for VNC to my machine at home, and it’d be nice to do this from my Nokia 770. I’ll give it a try in the next few days form my laptop and let you know how it goes.

So any luck? Would like to know whether 3 broadband offers real internet or just web. :)

Heh – just went to try and remembered that we had a power cut this morning, which would have taken out my machine!

    Whoops!

Will get it sorted and try again. Will post here once I’ve done it, but unfortunately wont be today.

    Cheers!

Well – I can confirm that it works!

I connected to my machine via SSH, then started a VNC session and a terminal session with no problems whatsoever. Obviously slower than normal, but usable enough.

I’m going to write a quick post about it on the site now anyway.

    Have fun!

Thanks … once again to the rescue! :)

I am planning on ditching the N73, and am a bit peeved that 3 moved from per second billing. Still got 6 months on contract left though :(
