Mobile Broadband on Three – SSH access to home

Tags

Well!  I had a request a while back from somebody on a previous thread to ask me if the mobile broadband option provided by Three was ‘Full Internet Access’ and not just WWW access via a mobile connection.  I can confirm that, after having testing my home SSH connection via the Three Mobile Broadband, it does indeed seem to be complete access.  I connected to my home SSH connection with no issues (barring a little slowness – to be expected).  I also connected successfully to my work VPN connection.

So – looks like you can go ahead  and get it if you’re looking for complete internet access.  Hopefully, yours will be the same as mine!

I was thinking of getting a 3 phone to do the very same thing.
When you made the ssh connection were you using a phone as a modem, or using the 3 USB modem dongle (with the data only plan) ?

The three website is very confusing as to what plan broadband lite
can be added – i.e. it doesn’t appear in the add-on options for all
phone/plan combination, as far as I can tell. So I’m wondering if
I should just go for the data only, USB modem option.

I was using the phone as a modem, connected by either Bluetooth or USB. I’m using a Nokia N73…

I agree with the Three site being unclear (and not just in that way!). Best thing to do is brave their customer services, as usually when they can sell you something, they will, so they’re usually only too happy to add anything you ask for…

I think the Data only plan with a USB modem should work fine as far as I know.

I just got a USB dongle from 3. Unable to get ssh or ftp working. How has it been lately for you? I may have to get a refund if I can’t get it working.

  4. I find that it’s fine for browsing the web, but it’s unable to hold an ssh connection as the latency is just terrible.

I agree that you wouldn’t want to use it for long, but for a quick check, or to start something going, it works well. Like you said, lag is bad, but to be honest, I wasn’t expecting much anyway!
