Urban Exploration – Talgarth Asylum

Tags

Wow.  It’s been two and a half months.

I can’t believe it’s been two and a half months!

20080629_DSC_7023.jpgLife has been kind of all over the place for a bit.  Posting has taken a back seat to the more important things…!  However – I’m back now, and raring to go.  And in that vein, may I turn your attention to a new section in the main gallery, on Talgarth Asylum.  Click on the main gallery link on the side bar, and go to the second page of albums to find it.  A trip to an Asylum isn’t exactly what i had in mind on Sunday,  but it happened nonetheless…

Talgarth Asylum is a (now closed) mental hospital in Mid Wales, just North of Crickhowell.  It closed (I believe) in about 1999, and has been left to decay since.  Some parts are very little changed from when it was closed, whilst others are more or less falling down.  The whole place is increadibly atmospheric, and just cries out to be shot from all angles.  So I did.  Well… a good selection of angles anyway.

They’re redeveloping the site soon – its going to be apartments and a hotel, so some friends and I decided to capture it before the inevitable march of progress finally erases the character forever.  You can find the results in the the aformentioned gallery…20080629_DSC_6926.jpg

This is my first attempt at so-called ‘Urban Exploration’, which is defined  “The examination of the normally unseen or off-limits parts of human civilization, or decay in built envrionments.”.  It’s really given me the bug, and it’s definitely something I’ll be doing again in the future.  Watch this space!

Until then, Enjoy…

Hi, I am really interested in going to the Talgarth Asylum and photographing it for myself. I am new to Urban Exploration. With the Talfarth Asylum being close to where I live. I was wondering if you’d be able to tell me a little bit about it and the best way to get into it?

Please help a fellow new recuit.

    Many thanks Natalie

Hi Natalie, and welcome to the fold!

I revisited Talgarth quite recently, and it seems that the planned redevelopment is still to go ahead. There are several places where you can get in through windows that have been damaged by vandals, though of course, as usual, I’d never suggest making your way in unless you can get in without causing any more damage. Most of the site is accessible (or was a few weeks ago). As usual, caution is necessary, and don’t take any risks. I’d also suggest (as with all Urbex) that you don’t go on your own, just in case you have a fall or something. The site is readily accessible. you can park a car more or less opposite the entrance (just drive up past the front block and just round the corner to a car park). I’d suggest going later in the day or early in the morning to get some shots with the sun lowish in the sky. The combination of curtains, windows and shadows if you can catch the light right is great.

As always, take only photos, leave only footprints…

Definitely come back and give us a link to any shots you take. Would love to see them.

    Hi,

I managed to go there today. There is hardly anything you can get into now. It’s being redeveloped as we speak.

I got into the dormitories though and took photos from the outside. I will be putting them onto my facebook. I will send you the link as soon as it’s done.

Is there any where else in Wales you can suggest a visit too?

I’ve actually been back in the last few weeks too. The whole site actually seems more open than ever. I’ve posted a few more shots taken in the Great Hall, which I finally managed to get into. Parts of the place have been demolished since my last visit, but it’s still well worth a visit…
