4D Ultrasound – Bloomin’ Amazing…

Babies eh?  Who’d have ‘em!  Well… us by all accounts, at least in a few months.  Today has been a kind of baby-centric day when it comes to posting, so i thought I’d round it off by showing off the little one herself.  Before she’s born?  Yep!

A few weeks ago, the Wife and I took a drive to a clinic in Cirencester to have a 4D Ultrasound done.  Well… strictly speaking, it was her who had it done rather than both of us, but technicalities aside, it proved to be a very interesting day.  For those not up on these things, it’s a way of producing pseudo-3d images of a developing baby in the womb.  It has been used as a diagnostic aid, but is also available privately as a method of ‘bonding’ with the baby.  This is the reason we did it, and although we both went in with a little trepidation, we both came out with the opinion that it was a worthwhile experience.

For our troubles, we got some pictures, and a 7 minute video which captured what was done.  It makes for fascinating viewing for anyone expecting a baby.  We’ve found varying different views from people regarding the video and pictures, from ‘freaky’ to ‘amazing’.  We’re firmly in the second camp.

So without further ado, here they are (click for bigness)…

And in wonderous cinemascope…

To me, the fact that this is even possible is incredible.  Especially as the technology underpinning it, ultrasound imaging, has been around since about the Second World War.  To us, it’s been a way of getting an early glimpse of ‘forthcoming events’ so to speak.  Some people say it spoils the surprise.  I disagree.  Unless she comes out orange and strangely bumpy and lumpy, then it’s still going to be just as much of a surprise when we finally see her. I still have trouble equating these images with the little wibbly, kicking, alien-like thing currently residing inside my good wife.  However, one thing it does hammer home to me is that THIS IS REAL! And you know what?  I can’t wait :D
