Those who know me will know I’m a bit of a Star Wars nut. Nothing wrong with that.

I’ve always had a particular fondness for the idea and FX used to make the Lightsabers in the films – it always fascinated me from the time I was a kid up until now. The idea of making my own short film including those sort of FX has forever been a bit of an ambition. With that in mind, I thought I’d post a few quick clips that I made a few years ago. One is me and my good mate Martin messing around in his back garden, with some props (a broomstick and a crappy toy lightsaber!), to which FX have been added. The second is a quick proof-of-concept for lightsaber FX using Adobe AfterEffects.

There should be two YouTube vids embedded below, but a few people have told me these don’t seem to work in their browser, so you can get to them here and here.

<ibed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></ibed>

<ibed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></ibed>

The whole idea with these was just a bit of a mess-about to prove that it could be done. This planted the seed, and I always hoped I’d be able to do something better…

So – here’s me, hoping that I can finally get this thing off the ground… Only time will tell, but I think that this time, it may actually happen!

The thing that’s got this up and running in my head again has been my recent purchase of a ForceFX replica lightsaber. I’m not the type to buy these types of things usually at the prices they ask, but for one day only, they had them reduced from £89.99 to £24.99 on Play.com. How could I resist???? I geeked out – surely I’m allowed to do that once in a while???

Click for Bigness!

These things are great fun – all the effects, the starting up and shutting down effects, the swooshes when you wave them about, and all the other good stuff that adds to the fun. Who cares if it’s thee geekiest thing this side of Geektown. I don’t smoke, I hardly drink – surely I can have another vice?

Ah well – Will update soon when I have more to show you with regard to all this – until then, keep posted!
