Legacy DD502 – After more of a play…

Today, I’ve spent some time playing with the DD502 (first mentioned in this post yesterday), and have had more of a chance to get a feel for what the whole thing is like.
As I’ve said in the past, I’ve been looking for something that would allow me the freedom of hitting something with sticks, [...]

Alesis ControlPad move aside – Enter Legacy DD502…!

Today, I needed to get out of the house.
Suffice to say, the last few days have been kind of trying – life has a way of testing you to the hilt, and it’s kind of been like that. Its been the kind of time I’ve been glad to have friends and family around, and [...]

Alesis ControlPad – Problems!

A few weeks ago (and a few posts ago!) I bought an Alesis ControlPad. For the price, this is a great little device, and works really well – WHEN IT WORKS!
The first one I had had an issue with one of the pads, in that it was sending out random rubbish when I hit [...]

First Bangings with the Alesis ControlPad

I decided to bung my first go at recording a few bars of drums with the ControlPad. It’s not particularly good, isn’t quantized, and isn’t exactly the most in-time thing I’ve ever heard, but it shows how it can quite easily make drum parts sound expressive, even with a very rusty-and-never-particularly-good drummer such as [...]

Alesis ControlPad… a Mini-Review

And so to one of the most boringly-named, but nicest bits of input kit I’ve used in a while. you may have ready my article a few months back (during the infancy of this site) about the M-Audio Trigger finger (here if you’re interested – http://www.axemansplace.co.uk/?p=48). At the time, I really liked it, [...]

Huge change… Cubase to Logic

It’s been a few weeks since my last post, and not without good reason. A major thing has happened in those weeks – something I thought would never happen… I’ve gone and changed to the ‘other side’.
Let me explain…
Two weeks or so ago, I was recording on Cubase, and had a bit if [...]

Aluminium iMac, here I come…!

Well…
After a lot of agonizing, I’ve finally decided to go for one of the new 20″ iMacs. It’ll kind of be the end of an era, and will be the first time I haven’t had a big-box PC in the house for about 14 years. I was all Amiga before that, so it [...]

Recording using XP with Bootcamp on a new iMac – Developments…

I got a stroke of inspiration this morning and, having thought about what to search for on Google, I put in ‘Cubase with Bootcamp’. Got the following:-
Google Search for Cubase with Bootcamp

Good news! Looks, from general Consensus, that SX3 on Bootcamp is a very viable option. Looks like I may be [...]

Intel Macs with XP for Recording…

Hmmmmm…
Something just occured to me. Basically – I want one of these….

It’s one of the new iMacs that I was wittering on about in my last post. I tried one today in the Apple premium reseller in Cardiff, and I’m smitten. Sad I know, but there we go. What I’m trying to work out [...]

First Impressions – M-Audio Trigger Finger

My nice new M-Audio Trigger-Finger arrived yesterday. For those who havent seen before – it looks like this :-

Got it out of the box, and had a quick look. Seems well built, though its not that heavy, and certainly doesnt feel like a high-end pro piece of kit. However, it does feel [...]

Well… I did!

In reference to the post two down from this – I’ve gone and done it! It’s going to be my last hardware purchase for quite a while, as I’ve been doing quite a lot over the last month. Bought it from here :-
http://www.a1audio.co.uk
Darn good price if you ask me (£109 including delivery!). [...]

Time Flies – Work In Progress

To the right (in the music player), I’ve posted my almost complete version of Time Flies. All that is now left to do is a bit of mixing, and tidying up, and master it. All vocals are finished and sounding not too bad at all! Keep your eyes peeled for the final [...]

Shall I, or not….

I’m thinking of getting one of these…

Its an M-Audio Trigger Finger. It’s a drum control surface. I don’t mind playing in drums on the keyboard, but I think that one of these would make life that little bit easier. It’d cost about £118 from Soundcontrol. Hmmmmmm….
Good review here :-

I’ll Have a [...]

Phew….

I’m finished (more or less). Just a few more little plugins to install on My Cubase partition, and all will be well. Vista is now also installed my non-music partition for all that other PC-based crap that I can’t or won’t do in OS X. I must admit, I do like [...]

Cor Blimey!

Well… just got my PeeCee back up and running, and just ran PCMark04 on it. Got 6698! That’s compared to 3354 on the old machine. Basically, I’ve doubled my performance – and I havent even got the 2Gb og DDR2 in yet (currently on 768Mb DDR1).
That’s a hell of [...]

More Mammaries

I’ve just ordered a nice set of 2x 1GB DDR2 ram sticks for my new music machine.

Should have the motherboard and CPU through tomorrow – I’ve just realised that I’m going to have to start backing up all my stuff from the old PC ready for the reinstall. Oh joy. Just got to [...]

My Recording Studio Setup

A few people have been asking me what I use in my studio for recording. Well… Software-wise, I use Cubase SX3, and various VST instruments and FX plugins (too numerous to list here – if you’re interested, let me know!). Hardware and instrument wise, here’s a tour… (Click each of the thumbs for [...]

Just dug this out…

I wrote a very short piano and strings piece last year sometime, whilst playing with the Bossendorfer Grand Piano VSTi in Cubase SX3. The Bossendorfer has one of the most incredibly realistic sets of piano samples I’ve ever heard. This piece is only short, and sounds like something from a BBC hospital show [...]
